Some years back, I read a quote somewhere, and ever since, it had been stuck in my mind. The quote said, “If you fit in somewhere, doesn’t mean that you belong there”. I could not help thinking about how important this aspect of our lives is. Do we belong to the place we are in? And yet, at most times, we helplessly go on being a part of something. We are too busy to take time and self-introspect our expectations from life and what we want to do. Instead, we keep letting things happen to us.

Many of us go through this dilemma a lot of times in life. May it be our current job, our entrepreneurial journey, and any or every situation we are in. We frequently ask ourselves whether or not we belong to the place we are in. The very reason why we are asking this question to ourselves lies in the fact that there is something or the other lacking in the place we are.

I go by the 3 mantras listed below every time someone asks me how to know one’s calling in life. The kind of industry I am in and the kind of work that I do has made me realize how important it is to have an understanding of these three points. When in doubt, ask yourselves the questions as follows:

Question Number 01:

“Does my work bring out the best in me?”

It is essential to ask yourself if you’re happy doing what you do. And the best way to answer this is by ensuring that the place you are in brings out the best inside of you. My mantra for a satisfying day at work consists of a few things which keep me motivated every day at my work. Whether it is your relationships, professional bonds, job, your dreams about a new business, a new venture, or a new course you want to do; I believe it must bring out the best in you at every step.

When in that situation, you must be always at your best and give 100% to it. That brings out inner confidence and everything desired fulfills that zone. If the place is right for you, it will make you bloom with inner confidence. Confidence is not only in your mind or your heart but also in your persona. Therefore, it will show. It will make you feel happy that you’re growing and are satisfied with what you do.

Question Number 02:

“How does my work make me feel every day?”

Another important aspect to look at is how the place of your work makes you feel! Do you feel good about yourself knowing what you are heading toward this morning? Do you feel the energy and the excitement to face the new day and work? Talking about myself, I feel super-charged when I have to come to work every morning and it fills me up with positivity and enthusiasm to do something new and learn something new every single day.

So, while you are working, you must ask yourself: “How much is this situation or place making me feel about myself in terms of the excitement level that I have?” An individual who loves his job will always enjoy it and make every day count. They would be happy doing what the work demands rather than feeling that it is some load on them. They will expose themselves to challenges and would believe they could master it all in a swing.

Question Number 03:

“Do I feel passionate about my work?”

If you’re starting up your business, or you’re changing your job, or getting into a new situation, do you feel passionate about that particular task that you will be doing? It is so important that we love what we do. If we are not goal-oriented, not focused or determined at what we’re doing, and being around our work doesn’t make us feel good, then there is something wrong that demands introspection.

There might be certain lows in working life but if it is every time for the same monotony and the feeling of losing interest, then that is not the right place to be. We may not ideally belong to that place and even though we might feel “stable”, the satisfaction wouldn’t arrive. It’s important to focus on the fact that we are driven by what we pursue rather than just merely being a part of the crowd. So, whatever you go ahead for must make you feel alive and passionately driven.

Hence, all the above-listed questions are meant to help you introspect and address your “calling”. Whenever in a situation, ask yourself these questions, understand what your heart says, and follow where your passion takes you. All the best!
