It is quite fascinating that even though half of the global population comprises women, stereotypes take the better of us. Especially, if we talk about the Moving Industry, which is reckoned as a male-dominated sector, we often think that it has little or no scope for female employees. It all begins with the fact that we still hold a pseudo-image of the term “relocating”. A lot of people think Relocation Industry comprises only moving and packing where physical strength and endurance are required to move heavy furniture and other equipment from one point to another. This blurs a significant part involved at the back-end, which is planning, managing, supervising, connecting, communicating, and a handful of more such key tasks that make a successful move possible.
Age-old beliefs where women weren’t allowed to even think about working in a sector that was dominated by males are broken down in today’s time. Women are giving their absolute best and standing as compatible as any men, but they’re still victimized by the unfairness of the working world. Women, working in a male-dominated industry, face problems like lesser pay for the same job, lack of recognition, sexual harassment, inferiority, less or no equality in the workplace, and various other circumstances arising from the gender gaps. The pervasive stereotypes often tag women as too “caring” to work in a corporate world and often confine their duties as being a “housekeeper” or “child-nurturer”. Societal Expectations have been clinging to women since time immemorial, expecting them to only serve and provide for the family, not work for late hours and keep themselves from pioneering or outshining because they do not have the abilities to lead.
However, the need of the hour is to understand that a woman is as potent as any man and has what it takes to lead an organization. It is important to understand that a woman with conviction and determination can surpass all the shackles that bring her down if she works tirelessly for achieving her goals. Especially, in the Mobility sector, women must go all out without any restraint to understand how a move takes place. They must visit the Warehouse, witness the labor taking place, plan and organize the move on the field, and supervise at a level that the relocation becomes a successful one. She must deep-dive into the process and before all of that, she should direct herself and constantly realize that she is no less than any of her male counterparts.
Also, we, as a society must stop being faulty ideas or biases and should rather support women because they have the potential to make revolutionary changes and bring forth remarkable development. Women can lead by example and we can see several women entrepreneurs coming forth and proving that no barrier can stand strong when there is will and determination to accomplish. Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace are a must in any industry for the overall growth & development of the company.
Today, in 2022, women have brought tremendous changes in the Industry of Packing and Moving. With women leaders and managers, the Industry can see the heights it couldn’t before. The most enthralling part is that the ratio of women in Supply Chain Leadership Roles has constantly risen in the past five years. According to the Supply Chain Survey 2021 conducted by Gartner, it has increased from 35% in 2016 to 41% in 2021.
Women have proved themselves to be great negotiators and mediators, which is essential in managing the supply chain. Womankind, for ages, has managed and controlled households in the most efficient manner and these management skills stand inherent to their nature working as an asset to the Relocation Industry. Patience and calmness enable women to deal with the most taxing situations in a relaxed manner, ultimately coming out with a solution. They can maintain harmony in the workplace as well as view everything from a bigger picture. Women are always willing to learn and accept challenges, which is how they have come to prove that Moving is more than just “A Man’s task”. The moving Industry is becoming organized and diverse with time and brings more scope for women employees as well as women in leadership role. While Mobility is a vast concept, we must not confine it to a set framework. What is necessary is to understand the importance of emphasizing the active participation of women which need not be time-bound but can be long enough to bring revolutionary changes and significant development.
