The past few months have seen a surge in pet transportation as many pet parents have moved out of metropolitan cities to their hometowns in light of the pandemic. As reported in TOI, in the last four months or so, Air India flew over 2000 pets domestically while other pets like rabbits, hamsters, exotic bids, and turtles were transported by road using air-conditioned vehicles along with the presence of a pet handler. Clearly, the onset of the second wave has brought in some preparation this time as opposed to last year, when pets were abandoned by parents assuming they were the carriers of the coronavirus. While moving with your pets intra-state is not much of a task if you have your private vehicle, moving to longer distances can get difficult for both – pets and their parents.
Here are certain things you need to keep in mind while relocating with your pet and procedures you must follow without fail…
Location and Activity Tracking
One of the first few things that need to be checked off your list is getting a tracking microchip device injected in your pet’s body. It isn’t as bad as it sounds, your vet will just inject it with a device within seconds and your pet won’t even notice or feel anything. This helps you stay updated about your whereabouts while travelling or even otherwise. “Most countries require pets to be micro-chipped. The microchip needs to be in place before the rabies vaccination, hence, it is essential that it complies with the regulations in your new country. Apart from this, a GPS is also installed on the crates to track the journey of the pets,” says Aakanksha Bhargava, CEO of PMR, packers and movers company.
Air Travel
Indian airlines like Air India, Spicejet and Vistara allow pets on board. IndiGo allows animals that are only required for people who are differently abled. Pets that are below eight weeks old, pregnant or who have been deemed not fit to fly by their vets are not allowed to travel by airlines. Some breeds that are aggressive, or those with short muzzles (breathing issues) may not be allowed for security reasons. “Some airlines allow therapy dogs along with the passenger, but need to be checked with the airlines first,” says Dr Rajesh Rohi, veterinarian and professor at Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai.
Paperwork
International travelling has more requirements than domestic travels. First, you need to get your pet a passport. Next, you need to have a go-ahead from your vet stating that your pet is in perfect condition to travel and can sustain the long/short journey. Health certificates are a must. Pets who have been sedated will not be allowed on board as it is a huge risk to their safety and health. You can instead prepare them by giving them a pet calmer. If they face motion sickness or are not fit to travel in high altitudes, you need to check with vet for alternate options from your vet if there’s something you can do about it. You can also train your furry friends for air travel if need be, so that your fellow passengers are not disturbed. “For international travel, it is also suggested to have your pet's passport containing medical and travel records handy,” adds Bhargava.
Bhargava also lists down essential tips to prep your pet before travelling.
- One should begin the preparation of moving with pets well ahead of time. Necessary preps can begin at least sevenn months before moving internationally.
- One should familiarise and understand the new country's pet import laws and regulations.
- Each country has separate rules and documentations. Also, have multiple copies of all pet-related documents and keep them handy.
- Take your pet to the vet just a few weeks before moving for shots and full medical checkups, and get an international health certificate.
- Ask for anti-anxiety medication and sedation for worst-case travel scenarios.
- Check if you could get pet travel insurance or an international pet health insurance for the safety of your pet.
- Find a reliable relocation company which specialises in pet moving. It is best to find a mover which offers end-to--end services for a hassle-free move experience.
- Look for pet moving certifications. There are specialised companies that offer certifications basis quality pet transportation.
Train Travel
For travelling with trains, you need to first look for websites where there are options to book tickets for your pets as well. For instance, MakeMyTrip offers that option while IRCTC’s website is still not clear on the same. “You can travel with your pets in First AC provided have a coupe allotted for the travel. Otherwise, they will be with the guard coach in a crate,” says Dr Rohi. “There’s no certificate needed for domestic travel. However, you will need vaccination certificate, fit to fly certificate, Rabies Neutralisation test, and a certificate from quarantine officer,” he adds.
Crating Requirements
Small and toy breeds are often allowed to travel with you in the cabin provided they fit in the cage and can move in and around the cage. Additionally, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has laid down certain guidelines. “You need to carry your pet in an IATA-approved cage only and ensure there is enough space for movement for them,” advises Dr Rohi. They should not be restricted or suffocated at any point. The crates you choose should be well ventilated and should be made of non—chewable material, and have smooth edges to ensure their safety. Ensure they are escape- and leak-proof. You can also place some pee pads to soak up the urine in case they urinate during travel time. Throw in some chewy toys or treats to keep your pet distracted or occupied, some tend to get anxious when separated from their parents. Finally, mark the crate and name it after your pet for easy identification; do not forget to mention your details on the crate.
